After event: Linuxwochen Vienna May 5-7.

I know it’s an late remembering to what happened, but earlier I had no time to finish this report. Generally it was nice event, but the preparation wasn’t so smooth: in relation of the asked XO has been delayed, and the room was booked before few days of the event (thanks Cwickert your great help) – as usually – it took 3 days, but this time the venue gone to other place.

Now the Fachhochschule Technikum Vienna has given to us the place were the event was held, and took for me a bit time to get used to it that I have to make a little trip every day from Praterstern to reach it. Because the hotel room was booked at there, at Hotel Adlon. The hotel itself is wasn’t not too big, but a little bit hidden from the city, but perfect for small business travellers. However, mostly I could compare this hotel to an labyrinth, because of the tight maze-like corridors – and low number of rooms on one floor… But how was the event? Here we go…

I have arrived to Vienna one day earlier afternoon to my booked hotel to be get prepared before the event, a check the contacts – to make it sure nothing comes between. Gerold has left for me t-shirts (really thanks), and a bunch of F14 CD-DVD’s. I have tried to get my package from Daniel Jahre, but we couldn’t meet for some reason, so they took for me to the event place.

The first day was not really active, but Kevin Koffler has attended all (more or less in) three days and helped me a lot to spread the KDE version of Fedora, and made some CD’s for it. I think we have prepared an nice booth on upstairs. However, I have given a bit talk about possibilities within Fedora, and introduced Pulp, and few other projects – in hope that I could have few more attendant to my and Biertie’s talks. I have made pictures about the participants booths and tried to get acquainted with the place. Just a bit worried about the XO that arrives on time or not…

Our booth

Next day was much better, and twisted, and also interesting. Slowly the rush of the visitors/invited contacts also arrived, including with some problems. First we have noticed, that after Biertie hasn’t arrived to Vienna to give his talks in the morning, and there was no notice about it (not even an single email that sorry I couldn’t attend or such, but we had talked many times before the event) – and I wasn’t prepared to replace his talks, because I’m not an expert in SELinux…. I had to run few rounds to quickly find out what happened, and felt myself a little blamed about this. But as always there something good in bad things – I have received an phone call that XO is coming and my brother brings me, and my invited Nokia contacts also coming to make their talks, workshops. Furthermore – Laurin Novak (he is an new ambassador fom Baden, near  from Vienna – pictures next) has also arrived for short time, and Kevin too helped me a lot.

Surprise was that earlier I have talked earlier (before the event) with Jaroslav Řezník, and tried to invite him for possibly get binded with my Nokia contact, so maybe we could work/discuss on mobile community possibilities within Fedora, and maybe here at Hungary. Jaroslav hasn’t promised for surely that he will attend, but for my biggest surprise he has arrived with his friend Volker Fröhlich and we had talked much – and I have introduced to my nokia contact Tamas Dankovics. We have agreed in that would be nice to have an Mobile application / QT developer spin based on Fedora, but we need go deeply fight with the blockers – like mass packaging, and licences. He also introduced to the visitors the new KDE on his machine.

The Nokia team has given a few talks: Qt Quick / QML, the second one on Qt Mobility – witch was really success, because even the workshops were at least 15-20 people who attended on these great hacking sessions. Most of the people questioned a lot about the XO, and the circumstances, even we tried to produce an mesh network with Daniels XO – but somehow didn’t worked… I was really happy about the created flyers, because it was much easier to give out the information, along with the CD’s-DVD’s. I didn’t counted – but at least 1,5 box discs has been given out. What I have noticed that more and more people are looked for 64 bit version, and not too much for the 32 bit, but newbies still looking for just the live CD’s… That could be kind of important when we ordering for F15. Also I have sold few t-shirts, and this made me happy.

It was an long exhausting day, and I think very successful. I could tell that plenty of KDE discs and the old F14 discs were given out, and we all agreed that was an nice day, and Jaroslav has promised that we’ll keep contact. Oh, before I forgot, we have won an old/new ambassador to Fedora: Sirko Kempter has registered on my machine in FAS, asked for support and mentor :) Please approve and teach him Kital! :)

On late night when I arrived back to the hotel have prepared for my next day talk, added few improvements to my presentation and hoped everything will go better. I have went out little bit to the city, walked at night around Stephans Kirche, and enjoyed Vienna life for short, but I was really tired to participate Linuxwochen Party that they arranged.

On next day, when I have went back to my fedora desk, I wanted to finish my talk presentation – but after 9′o clock the people also begun to arrive and ask more about Fedora, and our community – so I had no really chance to finish it, until Kevin, and later Laurin has arrived. But once after an longer edit I wanted to save my work – something has went wrong and the presentation application has collapsed, and the created file was corrupted, it’s only opened for me an huge empty file, damn it…. :(   We have tried with Laurin to recreate what was lost, but it was an quite impossible mission, when you have only one hour left before the talk. So I had to do my best, and hold my talk basically with an short quick notes, but I think it was nice, and I tried to focus on the theme. It wasn’t so nice, and I had better talks before I’m sure, but I have received from the participants a lot of questions, and mainly it was alright. Rest of the day we got lot visitors, and promoted fedora till late afternoon, till the event has closed. To continue the good tradition – I have given out one t-shirt for the event game as prize (promotion is never worse), and the day has been closed with nice ending. Cleaned up the booth, I have gained an new contact from FSFE in person of David, and left the event place with big calm – again it was alltrough an nice event.

  1. Thanks for your detailed event report. It was nice to meet you at the event.

    Some small corrections:
    * There’s only one ‘f’ at “Kofler”.
    * Volker Fröhlich isn’t the friend who came with Jaroslav, he’s the Austrian guy who also showed up that day.

  2. Thanks Kevin for corrections, Josef is my friend and I have to send him big thanks that I could attend Linux Wochen as he was driver ;-)

    Zoli, nice report. Thanks for the event!
