After event: Fedora Cafe – Győr, Hungary

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by admin on 17-01-2010

We had yesterday an great event, surprisingly successful. I was hold in Győr Plaza Cafe.

I have putted out the ad about Fedora Cafe event 2 weeks before, and asked people to send private mails to registrate, and if they have – special theme suggestion, for the open floor talk at the end. I had luck with the place: we have received the wifi internet connection for free. Also I have made also request for official media in tracker, but sadly I have received none. However, I have copied F12 Gnome, and several LXDE, FEL respins too.

Later I have received at first 8 peoples mail, 2 has cancelled before the day, so it seemed that I will hold the event for 6 people, and they arrived in time. But it was a surprise: 3 other people has just walk-in between talks for an half hour when we hold an pause. They has seen my ambassador t-shirt and asked me to stay if possible, because they were curious about linux. Surely said yes! Never imaged that, indeed.

I have talked about our 4 foundation, 4F, a bit FOSS talk, about Fedora Factory (thanks for the earlier presentation fcrippa!) and our respins – because of 3 of my participants were artificer, and they had big interest in Fedora Electronic Lab. For others introduced the LXDE spin.

The oldest man (picture above), he came from Budapest, and I met with him at the earlier FSF conference. I was happy to see him again.

However, the event has took 6 hours, and the end of the event we agreed that was nice, we will return, hopefully with more people.

When the less is more…

I have an not really good experience around Fedora and it’s size. This problem came through when I realized that Fedora 12 easily eats up 4 Gb SSD at my Asus eeepc 701. Basically Gnome version runs perfectly, but from 4 Gbyte – the default install takes over the half, and with all of the updates ends up 3 Gbyte, filled with progs. One Gbyte for the usage, well is not too much. When I think on, then it’s enough to watch an bit longer streamed youtube video, or download some stuff, and that’s it. It’s over… I have also installed XFCE respin, but this is near the same. On LXDE, I say there is hope – but I say it’s still too much.

The question is, what happens when I drop the whole gnome and it’s dependencies, and I replace them with independent python and/or perl based gtk progs? What if, when I try to cumulate such a progs where mostly the whole system builds up on python, and/or perl modules? Could it be created the similar quality Fedora? Well, I hope.

I have begun experiencing with packages, and it seems I have a good target to have an small, but strictly robust respin. To have an respin what has all needs, without hitch and works even on the smallest netbook too. On that way, I think – I will kick out several packages from LXDE spin, and I will leave only Openbox – and I must try to create the nearly same gentle desktop. This is the right way? Maybe.

But, wait. How about to use just the netinstall iso to pull down through virtual RPM’s the respins? Virtual RPM’s what contains only other progs as dependencies… How about, to group up apps around tasks, and build them to custom virtual RPM’s – and add to Anaconda? How about, if you want to add upgrade, and you must only use packagekit servicepack ability, and change what just that only one virtual rpm contains?
Is it a way to have any respin type of Fedora – like light, server, desktop with several flavours, or security?

Wouldn’t be great?

First: Happy new year to all at Fedora and Red Hat! This is my first entry of this year – so as usually like people do – I try to review what  is done, and awaiting me.

It seems many things happened last year: we had a great event at Budapest, I’ve got more and more known as Ambassador here at Hungary, and lot of possible contributors are coming to me to talk about Fedora. This makes me inspiring, thinking to what could be more needed, or makes things better in this year.

Lot of to-do’s before me, and it seems that 2010 will be even more awesome (hopefully), and I’ll try to achieve as many as possible. From these to-do’s are a few will be hard, like to have an another main Fedora event at here Hungary. Two are basically is known, one at Szeged, one will be by FSF at Budapest (hopefully as last year), and a third as I would like to have at Pécs. This is an great opportunity to gain more Fedora contributors, but after several mailings it seems that city governing has other plans. Because of Pécs will be in this year the Cultural City of Europe in May, they could be saying to this event “No” – because the University part of their plans.

Therefore I think, I must switch to plan B – to find other city to get new home for the upcoming event at here. I have some possible University for that – but wish me luck. For the upcoming events here – several people asked from me to let’s have an small Fedora Cafe event in Győr to show the possibilities in Fedora 12. Well, I have suggested already several times and dates, but we will see this after the answers – and I’ll make immediately record into the Fedora events calendar and ask for swag & media. Futhermore, my biggest awaited event will be FOSDEM at Brussels, but not just for this – because I have never been in Belgium before.

Oh, about swag/media. I have last year contacted with Linuxmedia.hu, to let’s be a part of our free media project, and help us to spread Fedora discs. Well, after some hesitation, and mailing, chats with the leader of this company – it seems that he has no interest on this. Sad, but true. No matter, I have found an better and more professional company called StudioWorks – and they have very good prizes and sooo long references here: http://www.studioworks.hu/magyar/referenciak.htm
Just check them, I’ll think it has worth it – maybe also for producing our discs, and also maybe for boxes too.

Last year experience was also that people here not really know Fedora, and their respins. I thought that I make an small movie (2-4 mins), or an release movie to show the improvements, and get some new users. After the new release codename Goddard has born, I have gain some new idea. I have sent mails to NASA, and the Goddard Space Center to have freely usable orbital movieclips, maybe launch records too. I also sent mail one of the my favourite polish musician AM Samurai, and to VMRexor who as know as their pro videoclip director. (Both guys are registered at youtube). Result is: NASA has given to me an another mail contact to get access, and VM Rexor (who is also Fedora 11 user and programmer) will support me to create the Goddard release movie…

So, this year will be even greater as the earlier… Lot of things are coming, so… Let’s have it!
