Emergency sleeves for events

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Zoltan on 01-07-2012

Hi,

As you perhaps you know, we are almost low on media / discs. But instead of fighting for media, we think in the HU community this news can solve small event needs, and partially delays before event. We have made long discussions, what can help – and we think our designer kesigomu has a point. Without nice printed sleeves what holds our copy of the latest release, you can’t share our experience what the user can take away. How about to give an DIY printable sleeve, and instructions – as soon have them you can set up and Fedora desk, and give away discs on demand. No surpluses, and until the disc is burning – you can give more information to the visitor, talk about the community, people, friends, fudcon, and so on as necessary.

So we think, this foldable “origami” sleeves can give you a lot of opportunity. As you fold it together – at finish – you receive an pocket, where you can put more info, flyers, stickers, local available community and more. If you need them, just use it wisely, and all you need is an printer with borderless printing capability (with possibly 300-600 dpi resolution), and between 80-120 g A4 sheet shiny (copy) paper. Pretty nice, right? Wanna try?

We have added the sources, and the files to the official site – witch is at here. Our sheets are here. Folding instructions are here.

See you,

Zoltan

Hungarian community radio running tests on Fedora

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Zoltan on 07-01-2012

Hi Guys,

I have received today an mail, from an new open source beginning – but first time I haven’t believed that. But it’s working, and that shows again the power of open source. It’s an new online radio that tries to serve open source community, with open source music, and spread the freedom through it’s channels. Currently they are running the very first open tests (overdrive, effects, communication, mixing and so on), and mostly chaining up different channels, and their own mixes, and talks. Their music style is “ It’s a youthful, merry and energetic community radio built on Fedora foundations, representing Győr’s rythm of life.” as the their website describes at http://basefm.hu .

But there is some interesting feature they trying out in live – first they do this on Fedora, and additionally with an pimped Jack server. This is not big as it sounds, but when I have heard that the two DJ physically not sitting next to each other, made me really curious.

One of the DJ’s – Dj Smiley (Robert), controls and mixing the output, and his brother (Dj Igor – Zoltan) leads the talks, and other additional features to be an complete radio. Until Dj Smiley streams from my city Győr, his brother makes the rest from Hajdúhadház witch lies over 400 km opposite site of Hungary in air. With remotely connected servers, there is no fallen out stream, and not possible to there is no talk within the streamed music or between to the mixing if necessary. Sadly this part only possible with Skype as I have heard, but hopefully they will find the true FOSS alternative – as it’s the radio runs only free software.Of course there is not without problems, sometimes the stream has gaps, but that’s why the tests are running.

If you would like to connect yourself into the radiostream, it’s possible when you’re looking for inside in skype-contact: hungary.basefm.gyor  – or just want to say hello in mail: basefmteam at basefmradio dot hu.

I wish to them more listeners, and success for the upcoming year, and forward.

Merry Christmas to all Fedorians

After event: Linuxwochen Vienna May 5-7.

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Zoltan on 05-06-2011

I know it’s an late remembering to what happened, but earlier I had no time to finish this report. Generally it was nice event, but the preparation wasn’t so smooth: in relation of the asked XO has been delayed, and the room was booked before few days of the event (thanks Cwickert your great help) – as usually – it took 3 days, but this time the venue gone to other place.

Now the Fachhochschule Technikum Vienna has given to us the place were the event was held, and took for me a bit time to get used to it that I have to make a little trip every day from Praterstern to reach it. Because the hotel room was booked at there, at Hotel Adlon. The hotel itself is wasn’t not too big, but a little bit hidden from the city, but perfect for small business travellers. However, mostly I could compare this hotel to an labyrinth, because of the tight maze-like corridors – and low number of rooms on one floor… But how was the event? Here we go…

I have arrived to Vienna one day earlier afternoon to my booked hotel to be get prepared before the event, a check the contacts – to make it sure nothing comes between. Gerold has left for me t-shirts (really thanks), and a bunch of F14 CD-DVD’s. I have tried to get my package from Daniel Jahre, but we couldn’t meet for some reason, so they took for me to the event place.

The first day was not really active, but Kevin Koffler has attended all (more or less in) three days and helped me a lot to spread the KDE version of Fedora, and made some CD’s for it. I think we have prepared an nice booth on upstairs. However, I have given a bit talk about possibilities within Fedora, and introduced Pulp, and few other projects – in hope that I could have few more attendant to my and Biertie’s talks. I have made pictures about the participants booths and tried to get acquainted with the place. Just a bit worried about the XO that arrives on time or not…

Our booth

Next day was much better, and twisted, and also interesting. Slowly the rush of the visitors/invited contacts also arrived, including with some problems. First we have noticed, that after Biertie hasn’t arrived to Vienna to give his talks in the morning, and there was no notice about it (not even an single email that sorry I couldn’t attend or such, but we had talked many times before the event) – and I wasn’t prepared to replace his talks, because I’m not an expert in SELinux…. I had to run few rounds to quickly find out what happened, and felt myself a little blamed about this. But as always there something good in bad things – I have received an phone call that XO is coming and my brother brings me, and my invited Nokia contacts also coming to make their talks, workshops. Furthermore – Laurin Novak (he is an new ambassador fom Baden, near  from Vienna – pictures next) has also arrived for short time, and Kevin too helped me a lot.

Surprise was that earlier I have talked earlier (before the event) with Jaroslav Řezník, and tried to invite him for possibly get binded with my Nokia contact, so maybe we could work/discuss on mobile community possibilities within Fedora, and maybe here at Hungary. Jaroslav hasn’t promised for surely that he will attend, but for my biggest surprise he has arrived with his friend Volker Fröhlich and we had talked much – and I have introduced to my nokia contact Tamas Dankovics. We have agreed in that would be nice to have an Mobile application / QT developer spin based on Fedora, but we need go deeply fight with the blockers – like mass packaging, and licences. He also introduced to the visitors the new KDE on his machine.

The Nokia team has given a few talks: Qt Quick / QML, the second one on Qt Mobility – witch was really success, because even the workshops were at least 15-20 people who attended on these great hacking sessions. Most of the people questioned a lot about the XO, and the circumstances, even we tried to produce an mesh network with Daniels XO – but somehow didn’t worked… I was really happy about the created flyers, because it was much easier to give out the information, along with the CD’s-DVD’s. I didn’t counted – but at least 1,5 box discs has been given out. What I have noticed that more and more people are looked for 64 bit version, and not too much for the 32 bit, but newbies still looking for just the live CD’s… That could be kind of important when we ordering for F15. Also I have sold few t-shirts, and this made me happy.

It was an long exhausting day, and I think very successful. I could tell that plenty of KDE discs and the old F14 discs were given out, and we all agreed that was an nice day, and Jaroslav has promised that we’ll keep contact. Oh, before I forgot, we have won an old/new ambassador to Fedora: Sirko Kempter has registered on my machine in FAS, asked for support and mentor :) Please approve and teach him Kital! :)

On late night when I arrived back to the hotel have prepared for my next day talk, added few improvements to my presentation and hoped everything will go better. I have went out little bit to the city, walked at night around Stephans Kirche, and enjoyed Vienna life for short, but I was really tired to participate Linuxwochen Party that they arranged.

On next day, when I have went back to my fedora desk, I wanted to finish my talk presentation – but after 9′o clock the people also begun to arrive and ask more about Fedora, and our community – so I had no really chance to finish it, until Kevin, and later Laurin has arrived. But once after an longer edit I wanted to save my work – something has went wrong and the presentation application has collapsed, and the created file was corrupted, it’s only opened for me an huge empty file, damn it…. :(   We have tried with Laurin to recreate what was lost, but it was an quite impossible mission, when you have only one hour left before the talk. So I had to do my best, and hold my talk basically with an short quick notes, but I think it was nice, and I tried to focus on the theme. It wasn’t so nice, and I had better talks before I’m sure, but I have received from the participants a lot of questions, and mainly it was alright. Rest of the day we got lot visitors, and promoted fedora till late afternoon, till the event has closed. To continue the good tradition – I have given out one t-shirt for the event game as prize (promotion is never worse), and the day has been closed with nice ending. Cleaned up the booth, I have gained an new contact from FSFE in person of David, and left the event place with big calm – again it was alltrough an nice event.

I wish you a merry xmas and happy new year

Few ideas: QR Code for our websites, events

Filed Under (fedora, Uncategorized, websites, work) by Zoltan on 06-09-2010

I have lately playing with QRCode, and fallen into my mind one thing. How cool could it be if we are using free code for reading QR codes with our integrated webcam – not just for scanning rebates/coupons/tickets with webcam online – else identifying, (log in to FAS) events handling (reading them with mobile to put your reminder), or anything else as enclosed to in standard QR code. I have looked through the net, and it seems that not only me is who has thoughts like that.

Take a look that pages [1], [2]. There is currently no such program module, or applet what connects webcams of mobile computers (netbooks eg.). But it seems that there are hope.

But mainly after I saw Mairín’s the redesign of our Fedora pages, then I could tell it would be cool to integrate next to the dates of our events, meetings – so if somebody wants could pick up with their phone the events, or more. Btw, I could feel that not just with that could be more organised, or synchronised…. Or simply an click to an file what inserts the event to our calendars, or thunderbird – would be nice I think… or even combined: Behind the QR code picture the user per click could download the dates, details what automatically inserts to the event handler…

Free Software Street

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Zoltan on 09-07-2010

During June 2009 Albert Molina, Xavier Gassó and Abel Parera were preparing acts for the first conference dedicated to free software in Berga and Albert Molina proposed that the council could be asked to give a street name of free software

Due that Albert was working at that time at the city council, it seemed better to enter an instance with this request by someone outside, and Xavier Gassó was responsible for this task.

Months passed and this instance was buried without an answer.

In January 2010, while beginning to prepare for the conference proceedings 2010, Albert and Xavier tried to contact political leaders to advance the idea, while in contact with Mr. Richard Stallman to give a conference using the possible opening of the street.

Finally, the actions of continuous contact with policy makers, and were successful on 10 June 2010 the council adopted in Berga a resolution that named “Carrer del Programari Lliure” (catalan translation of Free Software Street) to the street proposed by Albert.

On 3 July, at 20:00, the mayor of Berga Mr. Juli Gendrau accompanied by Mr. Richard Stallman Inaugurates the street.

Fedora Ambassador Passport – hanging in neck

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by admin on 17-05-2010

This idea came alive after seen at Linuxwochen that I couldn’t answer on several questions front of the visitor. Mainly on most events has no internet possibility, but possibly as ambassador has an computer on side.
I have noticed that several talks, and resources are separated in every each ambassador storage. Now, with this, I would like to avoid the duplicated presentations, and I would like to have an sync-able common shared ambassador source what partially the marketing team supports, and provides.

Well, basically I want only an webpage as autostarter, and gather for the actually release the marketing stuff to an USB key. I think for that general purpose 2 Gbyte must be enough.

So, what could need an ambassador at the event?

  1. Contacts (FAS mails, with face picture, Red Hat contacts)
  2. Marketing archive information about the OS, and more program suggestions, frequently asked tech questions + extra tech specs depending on the event theme
  3. Tools for merchandising (CD-DVD box holder, business card holder)
  4. Printable stuff (fold-able CD-DVD box in case of emergency, flyers aso.)
  5. Archives from earlier releases (pps, videos, talk links)
  6. Templates for presentation, and talks
  7. Pictures to freely usable to presentations, improvements
  8. Talking points, one page release
  9. Actual bootable BFO image, and actual 700 MB LIVE ISO
  10. Offline USB live creator (I will look for this solution)

I will create this, but if anybody has an good addition, what could hold an ambassador around his neck then make a comment.

Planning something big – Project FNote One

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by admin on 28-04-2010

I know that really could be reality. Some of my nokia workmates including me begun planning something big lately. All we need is money, time and good luck. We have already talked a lot about it, we have made several mailings, and drawings with Fedora Electronic Lab, sketches how will be look at the end – but we didn’t found the perfect PCB candidate for our plannings. Until now. We have seen the copyleft licenced Nanonote. And the decision has made. We need similar to this. To create an portable device, what runs purely Fedora itself. An PDA, or/and IP mobile, table device what builds upon open source resources completely A to Z.

The idea came from the first open source chassis – VIA Nanobook. We need only the upper screen part, what we will shrink down to around 8″, adding some keyholes, and that’s it. The heart of this device could be an touchscreen with the Nanonote’s PCB. But there is something what we thinking: to have an X86 based opensourced processor or SoC, to run natively Fedora… But it’s impossible to find such. Still there is hope, but not X86 based: at OpenCores the OpenRISC 1000 or 1200. What is a must, we need as many as possible open source electronic modules to prove it, that we alone could say: We made IT (TM by Linux.com).

But we have an great suite FEL, and we will try our best as our time allows. Guys, wish to us good luck, and anyone who wants to help in design are welcome.
